Before you buy a robot vacuum: a home checklist
Check the places a robot must travel and the maintenance you will still need to do.

Walk its route
Start at the proposed charging location and walk through the rooms you want cleaned. Note door thresholds, narrow gaps, loose cables and furniture legs. Compare measurements with the model’s documentation. A robot that cannot reach an area cannot maintain it.
Think about preparation
Decide whether you can keep floors clear enough for routine use. Children’s toys, clothing and charging cables can make a tidy demonstration very different from daily life. Obstacle features deserve independent testing rather than an assumption that the robot will handle everything.
Read the maintenance routine
Find the instructions for emptying the bin, cleaning brushes, replacing filters and caring for sensors. If a model has a dock, check the dock’s size and any consumables it uses. Automated features can change maintenance tasks without eliminating them.
Questions for a shortlist
- Can the robot and dock physically fit where you plan to use them?
- What does the manufacturer say about your floor and rug types?
- Which functions require an app, account or internet connection?
- Are replacement parts available locally?
- Can you prevent entry to rooms you do not want cleaned?
Make a fair value comparison
Compare purchase cost together with consumables and the amount of manual work you expect to keep doing. A robot is not an alternative to every cleaning tool: stairs and areas outside its route still need attention.
What evidence to seek
Look for independent demonstrations of navigation, pickup and obstacle handling on surfaces similar to yours. Be cautious about turning one promotional video into a general performance claim. This checklist is category guidance, not a hands-on review or a ranking of current models.
